Indian State Sees Iris Recognition Bolstering Security at Government Solutions Secretariat
Increased global concerns about security have been reflected locally in a Government Solutions decision to deploy Iris recognition-based security systems from LG Electronics to control and monitor access to the Chief Minister’s Office in Hyderabad. It is not only the first such system deployed in Andhra Pradesh State but also in India.
The LG IrisAccess 3000 system, manufactured by the Korean electronics giant and marketed by the US based, globally responsible Iris Technology Division working through its Indian partner 4G Informatics, has been installed as part of a total security and identity management solution delivered by Electronics Corporation of India Limited at Andhra Pradesh State Secretariat.
Iris recognition is one of several biometric technologies that are increasingly being used to authenticate human identity in verification (1-1) or identification (1-n) mode. Biometrics-which rely on measurable and individually unique physical or behavioral characteristics are replacing older authentication conventions -possession of a key, a card, etc, or knowledge of a password, a PIN, or the correct answer to a challenge-response-which are easily compromised. Iris recognition is generally conceded to be the most accurate of the biometric technologies which include fingerprints, hand geometry, voice, and an older but much more invasive ocular-based technology, retinal scanning.
Iris recognition involves taking a digital picture of the iris (externally visible colored ring around the pupil) of eyes of people enrolled in the system. Put into a database as a stored value, a small 512 byte digital template is compared against the digital template produced on subsequent live “presents.” Real time authentication is delivered in less than 2 seconds. In addition to authentication, the system also produces precise records of when individuals come and go. The system also makes it possible to see when and where an unauthorized attempt at entry is made, so that appropriate measures to investigate possible security threats can be made.
The Chief Minister Of Andhra Pradesh Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu stated, “I am happy to launch Iris Recognition based Biometric Access Control system for the first time in India at our Secretariat. We were interested in upgrading our security system to deliver robust protection and security not just for today but for futures. After evaluating many of the different biometric technologies, most of which come in many different forms, we are sure that iris-recognition, and the fact that the LG IrisAccess 3000 is second generation of the worlds leading iris recognition platform provide both the security we want today, as well as the security an uncertain world may require tomorrow.”
CM’s Office statement was echoed by Dr. Sreeni Tripuraneni, President of 4G Informatics who said: This is just the beginning of a dramatic uptake of biometric technology in this country. Iris recognition is highly accurate, non-invasive, scalable and fast.
